Nicolai Kultur: A World of Experiences in the Heart of Kolding
Just a short stroll from your apartment lies a place where historic architecture meets modern creativity. Nicolai Kultur is not just one venue, but a hub of five unique buildings, each offering something special. The old Latin school has been transformed into a modern cultural village, where cobbled courtyards connect everything from children’s play and film art to gastronomy and craftsmanship.
Whether you are looking for immersive experiences, creative expression, or a delicious meal, you will find it here.
Nicolai for Children: Play Without Rules
Discover Denmark’s most unique indoor universe for children (and their adults). Spread over several floors, Nicolai for Børn is designed to stimulate both the body and the imagination.
-
Creative Workshops: Let the children go wild with materials, colours, and tools.
-
The Jungle & Theatre Hall: Explore the architectural climbing landscapes or play dress-up and take to the stage.
-
Peace and Aesthetics: The atmosphere is defined by calm and beautiful design, making it a pleasure to spend time in—even for parents.
Nicolai Cinema: Cosy Films in Intimate Surroundings
Forget large mainstream multiplexes for a while. At Nicolai Biograf, you get an intimate and personal film experience. The cinema is known for its carefully curated repertoire, ranging from indie arthouse films to major premieres and children’s movies. The charming cinema café allows you to bring a good cup of coffee or a glass of wine into the screening, while the plush seats invite total relaxation.
Nicolai Café: Relaxation in a Historic Setting
In the middle of the complex lies Nicolai Café, the natural gathering point for a break in historic surroundings. Today, the café is run by the same friendly faces you meet at the cinema—the volunteers and projectionists who ensure a personal atmosphere.
With its location in the beautiful old school building and outdoor seating in the cosy courtyard, it is the perfect spot for delicious snacks, a cup of coffee, or a cold beer.
Good to know:
The café’s opening hours follow the rhythm of the cinema. It generally opens one hour before the first screening and stays open until about half an hour after the last film starts. Please note it may be closed during the gap between morning and afternoon screenings.
Nicolai Stage & Craftsmanship
The Nicolai complex pulses with professional art and music.
-
Nicolai Scene: Experience everything from concerts and lectures to intimate theatre performances.
-
The Workshops: The courtyard houses several working studios for artisans. You can often peek inside to see ceramicists or designers at work, offering a fascinating glimpse into creative craftsmanship.
The Nicolai Courtyard: The City’s Hidden Breathing Space
Between the buildings, you will find open courtyards where you can feel the whisper of history under the old trees. The courtyard serves as an extension of the various houses—here you can enjoy the sun, let the children run free, or experience outdoor events such as markets and concerts during the summer months.
